Jamal Aziz
Advisor for Youth Empowerment and Mental Health Advocacy
Jamal Aziz is an inspiring and dedicated young leader currently training to become a mental health nurse. His personal mission to serve others is matched by his hands-on experience across a wide range of community initiatives and mental health settings. He brings to The Salik Project not only lived understanding of mental health but also a powerful commitment to empowering the next generation.
In December 2022, Jamal co-founded The Young Khadims, a grassroots youth-led initiative uniting young people from mosques across Rochdale to “selflessly serve society.” Under his leadership, the group has created safe, meaningful alternatives to antisocial behaviour, offering boys positive opportunities for personal growth and community contribution. Their impactful work—ranging from social outreach and community fundays to mental health and drug awareness workshops—has challenged stereotypes and built bridges across communities. The Young Khadims have been recognised locally, featured in media, and were finalists at the Rochdale Diversity Awards 2023.
In recognition of his exceptional community work, Jamal was shortlisted as a finalist for the Greater Manchester High Sheriff Young Citizen of the Year Award 2024, a prestigious honour celebrating his role in designing and delivering vital youth programmes focused on mental health, wellbeing, and empowerment.
Alongside his voluntary commitments, Jamal has completed several mental health placements across crisis teams, psychiatric units, and multidisciplinary care environments. His frontline experiences have deepened his understanding of service user needs and strengthened his professional practice as he progresses toward qualifying as a registered mental health nurse.
Fluent in English, Pahari, and Urdu, Jamal is a confident communicator who connects effectively with diverse communities. As an advisor to The Salik Project UK, he plays a key role in shaping youth-focused outreach and mental health advocacy. His integrity, energy, and grassroots leadership make him a vital voice for young people across Greater Manchester.
