Here to Serve
Our Mission
Salik Project UK supports South Asian individuals in recovery from addiction, and the families and friends who walk alongside them. We believe recovery isn’t a solo journey — it requires informed families, trusted community support, and early, sustained engagement.
Our focus is to reduce stigma and improve access to support within South Asian communities in the UK through education, culturally informed signposting, and grassroots research (community listening and focus groups). This helps ensure prevention, engagement, and recovery approaches are grounded in lived experience and responsive to changing patterns of harm.
We are not a treatment provider. We work alongside existing services to strengthen early intervention, reduce isolation for families, and support engagement and re-engagement — contributing to a more connected and effective recovery system.
To Serve Not Judge - What We Do:

Support
We provide emotional encouragement and practical assistance to families affected by addiction, especially carers who are often overlooked. This includes easing financial pressure, resources for navigating care systems, and a listening ear from people who understand. While we do not provide counselling, we are here to walk alongside you, offering solidarity and support through life’s toughest moments.

Educate
We work with local organisations, service providers, and community leaders to raise awareness of the cultural stigma and barriers surrounding addiction in South Asian communities. Our presentations and training sessions help professionals improve outreach and engagement with families that might otherwise remain invisible.

Refer
We signpost individuals and carers to appropriate, trusted services for addiction recovery, mental health, financial advice, and more. We help families understand what help is available and how to access it—ensuring no one is left alone to navigate complex systems or wait endlessly without guidance.

Voice
We advocate for the needs of underserved communities, especially when stigma or language barriers prevent people from speaking up. Whether it’s sharing stories, attending community meetings, or contributing to mainstream service providers, we aim to amplify the voices of those affected by addiction in our communities as well as the people who care for them.

Empower
We believe knowledge is power. By sharing resources, running hard-hitting awareness campaigns, and connecting families with the right services, we help them take meaningful steps toward healing. Our work is rooted in the belief that collective care—when carers are supported, informed, and equipped—creates the best chance for long-term recovery.

Supporting Those Around Recovery
Caring with someone for addiction needs strong family and community support network.
The Salik Project UK was established in loving memory of Abdul Hameed Salik, a respected local community leader, and in honour of loved ones who faced addiction — including those taken far too soon.
From our own experience supporting a loved one through addiction, we learned that recovery doesn’t rely on treatment alone. It also depends on families and communities having the knowledge, confidence, and support to act early, stay connected, and keep going when things wobble.
In many South Asian communities in the UK, stigma still delays help-seeking and keeps families isolated. We tackle this through culturally informed education, training, and awareness — and we lead grassroots research (focus groups, community listening, insight write-ups) to keep an accurate, real-time picture of what’s changing on the ground.
We are not a treatment provider. We strengthen the wider recovery system by helping communities engage earlier and by supporting the people around recovery — including carers who often face financial strain and emotional pressure with little recognition.
Alongside this, The Salik Foundation provides targeted practical support to ease immediate hardship for people in recovery and the loved ones standing beside them.
